Groom – the Banbury Barbers exclusively for men
Barbers have long been the traditional hair salon for men. In days gone by, it was easy: men went to the barbers and women went to the hairdressers.
With the advent of unisex hair styling, both women and men rubbed shoulders in the same salon. But today, many men are again choosing to visit a barbers rather than a hair salon.
From the late 1800s, men’s barbers were at the height of their popularity. These were exclusively masculine places where men would go, not only to have their hair cut, but to also get shaved and of course, meet up with their friends and peers.
In 1904, Gillette’s safety razors reached the mass-market. This meant men could shave themselves safely and easily at home, which led to a downturn in the fortunes of the gent’s barbers.

One reason for the surge in popularity of gent’s barbers again today is the precision type of hair cut. Barbers are trained differently to hair stylists. While you might not want a short back and sides, you might want a more traditional cut.

Men often choose to visit a barbers today because they enjoy the masculine atmosphere and the conversation. Here the talk is more likely to be of sport and fast cars (and women!), compared to the more feminine chit chat of the unisex salon.

Although few might admit it, a barbers is a place where men can go to be pampered. Relaxing in a comfortable chair wrapped in warm towels before experiencing the closest shave with a ‘cut throat’ razor, is a very masculine pleasure.

Soon Banbury’s newest barbers will be opening its doors and offering all those traditional time-honoured services – just for men. Groom will be headed by Jacob Newton, a highly skilled and qualified barber. Included in the services will be hair cutting and of course, shaves with a single blade razor.

Groom will also offer men’s hairstyling for those wanting a less traditional cut. However, unlike the barber shops of the middle ages, Groom won’t be offering dentistry or surgery as a service!
